3 Ways To Protect Your Books From Damage When In Storage

Having books means having great entertainment options or a useful assistance with term paper. While having books displayed in your home can be a great way to store your books while simultaneously decorating your space and getting more use out of these possessions, there’s only so much room you can have for books within your home. So when you run out of space for your books on your bookshelves, it’s time to start thinking about how and where to safely store your books.

To help you figure this out, here are three ways to protect your books from damage when they’re in storage.

Put Them Away Clean

The very first thing you should do to best protect your books when they’re in storage is to put them into storage in a clean and clear state.

To do this, Kristar Advanced Tech Solutions, a contributor to Medium.com, recommends that you spend some time with each book to ensure it’s clean before it goes into storage. The best way to clean a book is to wipe off all the dirt or dust from the outside while keeping the book tight so none of the dust gets inside to the pages. You should then remove anything that you may have put inside the book, like a bookmark or other papers. By taking these steps, you can help to preserve the life and quality of the book even when it’s stored.

Pack Them In New Boxes

As you look for boxes to pack your books in for storage, Caylin Harris, a contributor to Real Simple, shares that you should always choose to pack them in new boxes that haven’t been used to store anything else.

The reason for this is because boxes that have already been used to store other items, especially things like food or other items with a strong scent, can attract bugs and other pests to that box. And if pests get into your books, they can destroy the pages and leave the books completely ruined. So before you stick your books in any specific box, try to make sure it won’t attract pests to it before you put it away in storage.

Store Them In A Safe Place

Where you store your books can have a big impact on how well the books will be protected.

Ideally, Brigitt Earley, a contributor to MarthaStewart.com, shares that you should store books in an area that’s climate controlled. Especially if you live in an area that gets hot in the summer or cold in the winter, or if you’re in a particularly humid environment, storing your books where the temperature and elements may get them could cause harm to your books.

If you’re needing to put some books way in storage, consider using the tips mentioned above to keep your books safe while they’re put away.
